How to successfully create your future career success in Asia?
Do you plan to set up your future career in Asia?
Here are 5 critical career success factors (CCSF) for your consideration.
Let’s start with a simple question: Do you plan to BE in Asia or would you like to stay in Europe, the Americas, America, Africa or Australia and start gaining business from there?
This is the most important question you have to answer, as it really impacts your strategy.
So, here is Critical Career Success Factor #1: BE in Asia.
In general, businesses in Asia prefer their partners to be in Asia. I have seen many attempts to set up business relations from overseas and most of them failed. They only succeed if you bring the relationship with you already.
In general it is very easy and reasonable to set up a business in countries in Asia. You can chose locations like Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines or elsewhere. Avoid China, India, Sri Lanka and countries with non-business driven or high tax policies. There are plenty of local organisation (profit and non-for-profit) who can assist you.
CCSF #2: networking is king.
Nothing beats relationships in Asia. Having said this this takes a lot of time to establish them. Flying in and scouting only in order to return to your base and send e-mails will be much less successful. Some say, it is a waste of time. So be prepared for a period of low revenues and high bills for coffee and F&B. No bribes!
CCSF #3: define your targets.
In general SME’s do not have much money to spend. Many are run by a tight family managed budget. They will be happy to take your advice – for free. Or they will offer you a bonus at the end of a successful project. But who decides about success or failure?So if you come from a premium consultancy or job, get prepared for much lower margins and flexible charges.
Which leaves you with MNC’s, Governments and alike. They will ask for your reputation, your representation here, referrals, etc.

CCSF #4: Competitive pricing. Great content.
To be brutally honest, unless you represent a global brand you will have to fight for good margins. But in the long term it may be a highly interesting business. Longevity and competitiveness are key for your business success. Sometimes you will get lower returns for years, but the new relationships and referrals will make up for it.
Your knowledge and content are queen in your success. So is your packaging.
CCSF #5: Become Asian.
With Asia truly becoming the growth engine of the world, they do not necessarily appreciate Western teaching and philosophy from the top. A humble approach is key.
If you intend to come and conquer Asia – think again. The trend is to BE in Asia and conquer the world. Knowing the non-Asian world can be your advantage.
